May 05, 2021 Media inquiries All Albertans over the age of 12 will soon be eligible for COVID-19 vaccine to protect themselves and stop the spike. After offering vaccine to Albertans most at risk for severe outcomes, Alberta has now progressed to Phase 3, where everyone over the age of 12 can make an appointment to receive their first dose. With this expansion, 3.8 million Albertans will become eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine. To avoid overwhelming booking systems, appointments will be staggered in two age groups.

Starting on May 6, every Albertan 30 or older (born in 1991 or earlier), can book an appointment through Alberta Health Services or a participating pharmacy.
On May 10, appointment bookings will expand to include Albertans ages 12 to 29 (born in 2009 to 1992).

More than 1.66 million doses of vaccine have now been administered across the province. All vaccine appointments will continue to rely on the incoming supply to Alberta. “This is a very exciting day for Alberta and it arrives right when we need it the most. We are battling an extremely aggressive third wave of COVID-19 and we know that vaccines are our best weapon against it. By opening bookings to everybody over 12 years of age, we are taking a huge step towards stopping the spike and hopefully putting this pandemic behind us for good.” Jason Kenney, Premier “We vowed to protect those who were most at risk of severe outcomes from COVID-19 first. We’ve done just that, and now, happily, we can move to protect the general population, starting with those age 30 and older. Edmonton Joins Major Cities

Edmonton joins other major cities around the world in having a park named for world renowned Author, Poet and Inspiring Humanist, Gibran Khalil Gibran. Gibran migrated to USA with his family in the early part of Twentieth Century from modern-day Lebanon, along with many people from the Levant who settled in USA, Canada and South America. Gibran is an icon of pride for Lebanon and for all countries of the Arab World. His books in both Arabic and English Languages are admired and cherished by all. His book, The Prophet, was translated into more than 50 languages and has sold millions of copies. Gibran’s books, paintings and articles made him a spiritually unifying figure and a point of pride for Canadians and many people around the world. The park is located in the neighborhood of Beaumaris and officially became known as “Edmonton Gibran Khalil Gibran Park” when the municipal Naming Committee endorsed the proposal by the local Gibran Khalil Gibran Foundation, earlier this week. There is a sizeable Middle Eastern population in North Edmonton, particularly in Beaumaris, part of Castle Downs, and many wanted a place named after a cultural icon. Community members engaged with the local city councillor, Jon Dziadyk to explore the possibilities.

The Gibran Khalil Gibran Foundation core committee is chaired by Mr. Joe Hak, and the membership includes Hussein Rahal, Honorary Lebanese Consul; Samir Bleibel, President of the World Lebanese Cultural Union – Edmonton Chapter; Yazen Haymour, President of the Canadian Arab Friendship Association; and City Councillor Jon Dziadyk is an honorary member and advocate. Joe Hak, Foundation Chair, said: “Gibran Khalil Gibran embodies the Spiritual Unity of all Lebanese, in Lebanon and all over the world. His gifted mind and soul roamed the universe and reached the highest of Holy Virtues of all human beings!” Jon Dziadyk, City Councillor, said: “This park is the work of great community leaders coming together and it honours a unifying figure of great literary importance. It is a welcomed addition to the community.” The renamed park is 1.3 acres and located at 15605 – 106 Street, adjacent to picturesque Beaumaris Lake. With the name now official, the Foundation will begin fundraising to landscape the park in a manner appropriate for Gibran. Announcements for “ribbon-cutting” and unveiling will be made when circumstances permit. The Foundation hopes to establish a place of quiet reflection, celebration, and to inspire youth to become familiar with the great works of Gibran. The park renaming comes at a time when the whole neighborhood is getting reconstructed, and will surely become a welcoming place for years to come. Massive expansion of rapid testing in Alberta

Alberta’s government is offering millions of free rapid testing kits to public, private and not-for-profit employers and service providers provincewide. At least two million rapid tests will be available for businesses and sectors in Alberta. This follows the successful rollout of more than 1.2 million rapid tests to long-term care facilities, schools, outbreak sites, hospitals, homeless shelters and industries across the province. Any employer or service provider in Alberta can apply for the free rapid tests. “Rapid testing kits have been used successfully in long-term care, shelters, and large worksites to keep Albertans safe. This expansion of our rapid testing program supports our overall COVID-19 strategy, to shield those most at risk, to protect lives and livelihoods, and adapt our actions to new evidence as it comes. I am pleased that we are able to give businesses and service providers another tool for screening cases early and breaking the chain of transmission.” Tyler Shandro, Minister of Health To be eligible for rapid testing kits, employers and service providers must submit a screening program plan that outlines:

protocols for administering the tests
the use of personal protective equipment
processes for reporting results and managing individuals who screen positive.

A health-care provider is required to oversee the organization’s screening program. However, the tests can be administered by a trained layperson, and self-administration is permissible under certain conditions. While anyone can apply, Alberta’s government will prioritize businesses or organizations involved with vulnerable populations, high-risk settings and workplaces, first responders, essential services and critical industry, and sectors that support the reopening of economic and social activities. Rapid COVID-19 tests can help identify pre-symptomatic and asymptomatic cases so they can be isolated early. Individuals with symptoms should continue to be tested by scheduling through Alberta Health Service’s online self-assessment tool. Alberta’s government is responding to the COVID-19 pandemic by protecting lives and livelihoods with precise measures to bend the curve, sustain small businesses and protect Alberta’s health-care system.

Quick facts

Rapid tests will be provided for free to all successful applicants.
Alberta has received approximately 2.6 million rapid tests since October 2020, with an additional one million expected before the end of April.
Organizations are responsible for all costs related to establishing and operating their screening programs and assume all medical and legal responsibilities associated with them.
If a business or service provider needs help finding a health care provider to oversee their screening program or requires additional supports to develop a program plan, a list of third-party resources is available at alberta.ca/RapidTesting.
Rapid testing kits have already been deployed to help screen and test cases, including:

- 523,000 tests to long-term care and designated supportive living facilities
- 443,000 tests to several companies in critical industries such as oil and gas, transportation, meatpacking and utilities
- 100,000 tests to support a rapid screening pilot in schools
- 40 COVID-19 assessment centres
- 47 hospital-based labs
- Eight homeless shelters

International plot to extort money from Iraqi MP was masterminded in Edmonton, police say

Police in Sydney and Edmonton have arrested the people allegedly behind a plot to extort money from the MP by harassing his family, who live in Australia. An international scheme to extort money from an Iraqi politician by harassing his family in Australia came to an end this week after police in Sydney and Edmonton carried out simultaneous raids on the homes of the people allegedly behind the plot. The New South Wales Police Force said on Wednesday that Strike Force Mulach, which was created to investigate “multiple violent incidents” since December 2019 at a home in the Chester Hill neighbourhood of Sydney, arrested two men, Luminous Touto, 24 and Zigalo Sigora, 22. They have been charged with a number of offences, including “threatening death or grievous bodily harm” and “demand property by force in company with intent to steal.” The target of the campaign was reportedly Ahmed Al Asadi, a senior Iraqi politician, who has dual citizenship in Iraq and Australia. He had fled Saddam Hussein’s regime, but has since returned to Iraq and is the MP for Baghdad. He was targeted for money. Edmonton police said the social media accounts were linked to Edmonton, and in the summer of 2020, the force received an INTERPOL request to help with the investigation.

Expanding Alberta’s COVID-19 vaccine rollout

More than 1.79 million Albertans will receive the COVID-19 vaccine this spring under Phase 2 of Alberta’s vaccine distribution strategy. Phase 2 vaccinations will be offered in a staged approach and once completed, will have vaccinated anyone aged 50 to 74 years, anyone with high-risk underlying health conditions, First Nations and Métis people aged 35 and older, residents and staff in congregate living settings, and eligible caregivers. Phase 2 is targeted to begin in April, depending on the supply of vaccine. “Alberta’s vaccine roll-out has always prioritized people who are most at risk from COVID-19 and Phase 2 is no different. We have listened to advice from public health experts and our Vaccine Task Force to identify those at-risk Albertans. By the time Phase 2 is complete, 1.79 million more Albertans will have received COVID-19 vaccination, and we will be able to move onto vaccinating the general public. Our province is ready to get vaccines into the arms of Albertans as quickly as possible. However, this relies on Alberta getting the right supply of vaccines from Ottawa, on time. We need the federal government to end the delays so we can get the job done.” — Jason Kenney, Premier “Alberta’s vaccine delivery program is among the best and will continue to ramp-up as we get more supply. The more vaccine that arrives in Alberta, the faster we can get to Phase 2 and begin immunizing many, many more Albertans. The pandemic is not over, but we are steadily building our defences against it.” — Tyler Shandro, Minister of Health Eligibility in Phase 2 will move from Group A toward Group D:

Group A includes:

- Albertans aged 65 to 74, no matter where they live.
- First Nations and Métis people aged 50 to 64, on and off reserve or Metis Settlements.
- Staff of licensed supportive living facilities not included in Phase 1.

Group B includes:

- Albertans aged 18 to 64 with high-risk underlying health conditions. Additional information on specific conditions will be provided prior to Phase 2 rollout.

Group C includes:

- Residents and staff of eligible congregate living settings. This includes correctional facilities, homeless shelters, and group homes, including disability, mental health and other types of licensed supportive living.
- Health-care workers providing direct and acute patient care who have a high potential for spread to high-risk individuals.
- Caregivers of Albertans who are most at risk of severe outcomes.

Group D includes:

- Albertans aged 50 to 64, no matter where they live.
- First Nations and Métis people aged 35 to 49 on and off reserve or Metis Settlements.

Detailed information on how eligible Albertans will receive the vaccine will be released prior to each step in Phase 2. The timeline for starting each phase is dependent on vaccine supply and availability. Alberta relies on the federal government to distribute vaccine to the province. Work to identify sequencing for all other groups is underway. All vaccinated individuals are expected to continue to follow health guidelines and restrictions. Alberta’s government is responding to the COVID-19 pandemic by protecting lives and livelihoods with precise measures to bend the curve, sustain small businesses and protect Alberta’s health-care system.
