ASMAA & NAHEDA KADRY

by Emily Gruz - Jalya Writer

Asmaa and Naheda Kadry are 2 sisters who are following the same career path in the dental field, and share a strong passion for the art of makeup.

Whether it'd be glam, FX or corrective and sculpting makeup, they do it all! Asmaa's and Naheda's business is called "Sisterly Snatched Makeup", and can only be found on Instagram. They have been playing with makeup their whole lives and carry artistic genes that help them execute amazing, symmetrical makeup looks.

They began doing makeup professionally at the start of 2018 and have become extremely active on social media about 1.5 years ago. They have also taken cosmetology courses and understand all skin types and face shapes needs.

Being in the dental field, Asmaa and Naheda are both a little OCD and consider themselves germaphobes. They value a clean work space and clean sanitized tools before every client. Disinfection is instilled in their brains, making it come in handy in being educated on how to disinfect properly to provide safe services for all of their clients!

When did you start your business? Was there something/someone who inspired you?

We started our business in 2018; Sisterly Snatched Makeup. Both me and my sister have a passion for makeup and truly inspire and push each other to do better.

Growing up, our mom always gave us creative control over many aspects in life making it easy for us to transition into the makeup world and have the freedom to express who we are through this form of art. Our mother taught us at a young age to love ourselves the way God made us and to not depend on makeup to feel good about ourselves, but use it as a way to have fun and express our personalities.

She also taught us to work hard, have fun, and love what you do in this life. Having such an amazing woman to look up to has inspired me and my sister to follow our dreams and passions of being aesthetic influencers in the beauty community.

Would you say you reached all of your goals since you started or do you have more to achieve?

Our goals, where to even begin!

We have set so many goals and have the energy and drive to achieve them all! We would love to share our knowledge on self care to our community. We strive to become staple MUA's as well and enjoy meeting new people and being able to bring a smile to their face when doing their makeup!

Our end goal is to create a makeup brand; "Sisterly Snatched Cosmetics", and design eyeshadow palettes and all types of makeup products for all skin colors! One day we will be more serious and ready to create that makeup line! For now, it is at the end of the list of goals we have!

What are the ups and downs when dealing with the Arab community?

The Arab community is a lot to deal with. We love being Arab but there are ups a downs definitely! The good thing is that arabs are loyal to businesses and are awesome customers! Word of mouth is their go-to so becoming known in the community is easy! We are also Arab and share the same taste in makeup styles.

The negative...Arabs run on Arab time! Clients usually are late but we try to book to make sure there is adequate time to complete a look! One downside to being a makeup artist in the Arab community is the feeling that we cannot grow into a big, successful brand because although we are in 2020, Arabs still look down upon women who travel alone and work out of country.

Everyone knows to make it big, L.A. is where the hype is and where your business will get the most traction and attention! But God bless, we are happy to stay local and focus on servicing the Alberta community for now!

What would you change if you had to do it all over again?

Nothing. My sister and I truly love working together and building a brand around us two! We respect each other as business partners, practice good communication skills, and entertain both opinions that we may have to ensure for fresh ideas. We also make sure the content that is being put out is authentic and true to our sisterly brand.

We also keep sister and business relationships separate. This way we can become successful and make sure the both of us are happy and involved 50/50. We believe in making mistakes and learning from them!

What challenges has Covid-19 brought to you and your business and how did you overcome them?

Being in someone's personal bubble puts us at higher risk of contracting the virus. Although we have always practiced good hygienic protocols, with the covid-19 pandemic, we began wearing proper PPE (like N95 masks), gloves and eye protection. With wearing these thick masks it becomes difficult to breath and we get really hot in them as well.

We book extra time for sanitation processes. We also screen our clients to ensure they are not sick and sharing their germs with us! Being makeup artists and having social gathering restrictions definitely set us back. No events means no clients! But with any extra free time, we spend it creating amazing makeup looks and fun content for our Instagram page!
