by Emily Gruz - Jalya Writer

"Hurouf Art started as a home business specialized in the preparation of art and gift items, with the spirit of Arabic calligraphy in our products. We make fully customized personal gifts and art pieces for all occasions. Our goal is to be one of the most important suppliers of Arabic art and decoration products. For now, we work out of our home in Edmonton west end." - Hurouf Art

When did you start your business?

We started our business in November 2020.

Was there something/someone who inspired you?

Not exactly, we have several talents and hobbies, and with the current slow economy and job losses we decided to put our imagination into action and build a decent source of income.

Would you say you reached all of your goals since you started or do you have more to achieve?

Not at all. We are still at the beginning of our plans and we have many goals to reach.

What are the ups and downs when dealing with the Arab community?

We are still touching the tip of the iceberg of the whole Arabic community in Edmonton, and so far the majority are cooperative and supportive according to their capabilities. Some people don't care about supporting local businesses.

What would you change if you had to do it all over again?

Nothing. Our plans are working well so far.

What challenges have Covid-19 brought to you and your business and how did you overcome them?

Ever since banning all the social gatherings, we had to focus more on advertising and detailed presentation of our products, as checking in person is not easily possible. Furthermore, as there are fewer social events like weddings and birthdays, it is obvious that the demand for gifts declined.

Also, with the bad economic situation, many people hold on to their bucks to spend on necessary purchases. We try our best to keep our prices suitable  **for all people.
